Lady Gaga: Just Plain Weird or Genius?
It seems that with every step she takes Lady Gaga becomes more and more outrageous. With just the MTV Video Music Awards alone, Miss Gaga may have scared off a few fans. But maybe that was part of her point. Maybe, with her wild outfits and gruesome performance, Gaga was finally letting it all out and searching for the fans that truly understand her. My personal hope is that more people understand her than get scared away.
While many believe that Lady Gaga is just a "flash in the pan," I believe this crazy lady knows exactly what she's doing. Many dismiss Lady Gaga's showstopping performances (and outfits) as just plain strange, but weren't David Bowie and Andy Warhol strange? Two great icons that Gaga admittedly idolizes. In her video blog on YouTube, "Gaga-Vision," Miss Gaga describes a moment when someone asked, "Why do you have a lightening bolt over your eye?" Gaga told the person that it was a tribute to Bowie and later told her friend, "Anyone who doesn't get that this is a tribute to Bowie has no idea what we're doing here."
When thinking back on some of music's strangest and most outlandish performers, I can only seem to think of the greats. David Bowie, Madonna, Freddie Mercury, Prince, just to name a few. Take a look at some of Lady Gaga's acoustic live performances on YouTube (links below), and it's not hard to see that Miss Gaga has the potential to be just as iconic as these legends.
